This feature introduced into the traffic police maximizes the output of the traffic personnel. Fifty motorcycles are used for patrolling. Each team is made up of an SI and a PC who move on the motorcycles.

The important features of these traffic monitors are:

  • The teams move in important sectors in order to regulate the traffic
  • The basic objective is not to book cases but to ensure speedy clearance of traffic
  • The teams reach the spot within a couple of minutes whenever traffic jams take place and clear the congestion
  • The monitoring teams have produced impressive results in all the major roads of Hyderabad. Removal of movable encroachments has been an important contribution of these team
  • Special Police Officers: A scheme is being launched for the people’s participation in policing. It is proposed to enlist professionals from various walks of life as special police officers (SPOs). The response has been very encouraging. Certain aspects of policing, which can be entrusted to the SPOs, have been identified with the twin objectives of:
    1. lmproving the police-public relations
    2. Offsetting the shortage of manpower in the Police Department.
Following areas of work have been identified:
  • Regulation of traffic at important junctions and advising the offenders on the spot
  • Giving information to the police about local anti-social elements, extortionists and organizers of social vices like gambling, illegal sale of liquor, etc.
  • Assisting the police in doing night patrolling * Family counseling
  • Helping the police in implementing the citizens charter i.e. ensuring proper response to the complaints, issue of documents tothe complaints, etc.
  • Manning the reception counters at police stations, receiving the complaints and handling the grievances.
  • Petition enquiries in simple cases
  • Counselling of criminals to prevent rowdism and pursue rehabilitation measures.
  • Traffic education to school children and to organise groups like truck drivers, auto drivers, etc.
  • Assisting the police in simple enforcement activity like controlling eve-teasing, etc.
