THE ELITE COMMANDO
FORCE
Introduction
 The
Greyhounds, an elite commando force of Andhra Pradesh, was
raised as a vital organ of the state police in 1989. Its
main objective is to deal effectively with the Left wing
extremist violence on the law and order front and other
situations arising out of unforeseen situations.
A specially trained and highly motivated
Commando Force of Andhra Pradesh to deal effectively with
the left wing extremist violence in the state to provide
security for VVIPs and VIPs and for deployment in grave
law and order situation and natural disasters.
The well trained and physically fit
Greyhounds Commando's professional competence in undertaking
sustained and systematic field operations in interior and
inhospitable jungle terrain throughout the state has stood
the test of time. In its short existence of a decade, the
force has acquired credibility and dependability not only
in the field of anti-extremist operations, but other grave
law & order situations, hostage situations, situations
created by terrorists and also situations arising out of
natural calamities.
 Andhra
Pradesh, for the last three and a half decades, has been
witnessing the activities of Left wing extremist groups
indulging in violence and exploiting every conceivable issue
that agitates the mind of common man for their sustenance
and growth with the sole objective of overthrowing the lawfully
established government through protracted armed struggle.

VIP's
- For deployment in grave law and order
situation and natural disasters
- To combat and control left wing extremism
- To deal with grave L & O situations
- To deal with emergencies during natural
disasters
Greyhounds is maintained as a youthful
force by drawing personnel from various departments of A.P
Police for a fixed tenure. The personnel achieve high job
satisfaction as the tasks are challenging and as they serve
the Nation in general and A.P State in particular.
Achievements

Greyhounds achieved
significant results in containing the left wing extremism
in A.P.

During 1996 Greyhounds
did commandable job in assisting the local administration
in coastal dists. of A.P which were devasted by a severe
cyclone.

In August 2000,
did an exceptional job when Hyderabad City was in undated
by unprecedented floods. The Greyhounds personnel were
pressed into service in different parts of the city for
evacuvation and rescue of people .
Functioning of The Unit
The Unit is headed by
an Inspector General of Police and all ot6her officers and
men are drawn on deputation from various organisations of
A.P Police. They are imparted
specialised training in field craft and weapons, handling
more emphasis is given to developing high standard of physical
fitness and mental alertness.
This unit offers its services
to other states apart from A.P. They started to give commando
training since June 2000 to Police Personnel from other states
of Maharastra, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Chathisgharh, Jarkhand,
Orissa and West Bengal.
